Springs are simple devices that have many applications from consumer products to complex industrial equipment. They act as storage devices for mechanical energy and change shape when external force is applied. There are various types of springs that are created using different methods.
The coiling method is most common for creating springs and requires a Spring Coiler or CNC spring coiler to feed the spring wire into a set of rollers that pull it into guides. The wire then comes into contact with the coiling point which winds the wire backward, shaping it into a coil. A spring must be heat-treated, or hardened, so that it can retain its memory and relieve stress developed during the coiling process. This is done by heating the spring to a specified temperature for a set amount of time and slowly cooling it so it maintains its characteristics and flexibility.
Types of Springs
There is a large variety of spring types that are made for different applications, including:
Compression Springs
This type of spring has a standard helix shape designed to provide an opposing force when compressed and shorten in length until all coils are touching. Compression springs are typically constructed from wire and are most commonly used in manufacturing applications, spring mattresses, mechanical pencils, and retractable pens.
Extension Springs
This spring type is helically coiled and designed to provide an opposing force when stretched. They can be stretched beyond their limits making them suitable for applications where failure is not an issue. Extension springs are normally constructed from wire and are most commonly seen in the Slinky, luggage scales, and garage door mechanisms.
Torsion & Double Torsion Springs
These springs are designed to resist or apply torque loads and come in two basic types: helical and spiral. Helical torsion springs act in a radial direction while spiral torsion springs are wound in concentric spirals. Torsion and double torsion springs are found in clothespins, mousetraps, watches, and motion controls for automatic machinery.
Belleville Springs
This spring type, also known as washers or disc springs, are used in conjunction with fasteners for pre-tensioning purposes. They are fabricated from a variety of materials including stainless steel, copper, and bronze.
